The Kirigami Project - Week 47 - Flames

And here we are already - the end of November and the end of our second-to-last month of kirigami. In November I reached for cozy Autumn colours and let my scissors flow in curves. If you compare last week's design with this week's, you'll see that the templates look quite similar (I'll admit to a double take) but the final design is quite different. This fold-cut-unfold-ing never ceases to be a joy - the surprise in the delicate unfolding of each design. I do hope you've enjoyed this series and been inspired to try a little kirigami beyond the snowflakes. (Speaking of which, we'll head straight into snowflake territory next week... but until then...)

This week's design reminds me of tiny dancing candle flames. To create your own Flames kirigami design, use the template below and the 4-point folding pattern.

The Kirigami Project - Week 41 - Bats

Who knew bats could be so pretty?! Don't you just love that ruffled flower right in the centre?

They certainly aren't this lovely when they somehow make their way into your house on a summer night and you have to chase them out with a broom while they swoop at your head and visions of teeth-so-sharp-you-don't-even-feel-the-bite dance in your head.

But these bats are both toothless and rabies-free, so go ahead and craft up a whole flock. Or rather a whole cloud of bats. Collective nouns are the best!

To create your own Bats Kirigami design, use the template below and the 6-point folding pattern.

These bats are a hint of what to expect from our next spooky kirigami design... a creature which sometimes appears in the form of a bat....

The Kirigami Project - Week 40 - Cats

It wouldn't be Halloween without some black cats. Though I'm rather partial to black cats at any time of the year - especially big fluffy ones!

Or why not cut yours out of colourful paper and add a few details with markers? Totally cute.

To create your own Cats kirigami design, use the template below and the 6-point folding pattern.

Happy crafting!

The Kirigami Project - Week 21 - Leaves

I'm really excited to share this one with you... it's definitely one of my favourite so far. Inspired by leaves, the graphic symmetrical design is quite dynamic. I hope you agree!

The actual construction is quite simple - just a leaf shape filled in with slashes of negative space - but the final look is almost hypnotic.

To create your own kirigami leaves design, use the template below and the 4-point folding pattern.

Send Pretty Mail #34/35 - Catalogue Envelopes

Next time you're thinking to drop that pretty catalogue / magazine into the recycling bin, why not flip through it one more time...

An envelope template is the perfect tool to turn your favourite pages into fashionable envelopes!

Simply trace around the template and cut out as many envelopes as you need...

Use a bone folder to score the fold lines...

Then fold and glue!

Just 3 steps and you'll have a bevy of beautiful and unique envelopes that are sure to delight the recipients!

Before sending these out, I'll be sure to add a little more fun with washi tape accents and pretty address labels.

Have you made your own envelopes before? What's your favourite kind of paper to use?

Send Pretty Mail #31/32/33 - Teacups & Watercolours

The newest addition to the shop are these ever-so-cute teacup animal cards from artist Darla Okada. I simply couldn't resist mailing some out!

Maybe you're a cat person...

Or maybe you prefer your beasties a little wilder... or more puppy-breathish.

Of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone send these sweeties out into the world without a little Send Pretty Mail treatment. So I grabbed my label templates and watercolours and went to work fancifying the fronts. Lightly trace around the template with a pencil and then go over the line with your paint.

With such subdued fronts, I thought more colour more pattern more more more was in order on the backs. Which was, I must admit, a bit of a failure. You may notice we've gone from 2 to 3 envelopes in this picture. But hey, that's the crafty life - failures happen! I'll seal these up with a lovely strip of glitter tape... because a little glitter cures whatever ails you... and carry on!

Want to receive some pretty mail in YOUR mailbox? Send me a note at info@omiyage.ca with your mailing address and a little something about yourself. I'll be making a list and choosing new friends to send mail to each month. And don't worry if you don't hear back from me right away - if you send your info, you should find a pretty piece of mail headed your way some time this year!
