Meisen Kimono Exhibition

Meisen fabric - Marcuson & Hall

Visit Marcuson & Hall for a striking online exhibition of Meisen kimono and haori.  Meisen fabric was produced in Japan during the first half of the 20th century.  It employs a type of weaving and dyeing technique which produced ikat* fabric faster and and in larger quantities than traditional methods.

The garments in the exhibit are examples of the  "off the rack" kimono available in Japan's first department stores.  You can also read all about the history and technique of this fabric. Fascinating!

*In Japan, Ikat fabric is knows as Kasuri
